Dai-ichi Life (U.S. presence via Protective Life)
- 1902 – Dai-ichi Founded: The Dai-ichi Mutual Life Insurance Company was founded in Japan by Tsuneta Yano, the first mutual life insurance company in the country.
- 1907 – Protective Founded: Protective Life Insurance Company was founded in Birmingham, Alabama, by Governor William D. Jelks to keep insurance premiums within the state economy.
- 1990s – Protective Acquisitions: Protective Life aggressively acquired small to mid-sized life insurance carriers, building a reputation as an expert in acquiring and administering closed blocks of business.
- 2010 – Dai-ichi Demutualization: Dai-ichi Life demutualized and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange to raise capital for global expansion.
- 2013 – Protective Growth: Protective acquired the life insurance business of MONY Life Insurance Company from AXA.
- 2015 – Acquisition: Dai-ichi Life acquired Protective Life Corporation for $5.7 billion. This was Dai-ichi’s entry into the U.S. market, making Protective its North American growth platform.
- 2016 – Acquisition: Under Dai-ichi ownership, Protective acquired a block of term life insurance from Genworth Financial.
- 2019 – Acquisition: Protective acquired the individual life and annuity business of Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company (branded as Empower).
- 2020 – Acquisition: Protective acquired Liberty Life Assurance Company of Boston from Lincoln Financial.
- 2024 – Strategic M&A: Protective (via Dai-ichi) acquired ShelterPoint Group, entering the paid family leave and disability market.
