Harleysville Mutual (brand)
- 1915 – Founded: The Mutual Auto Fire Insurance Company of Harleysville was founded in Harleysville, Pennsylvania, by Alvin C. Alderfer and local citizens to insure automobiles.
- 1917 – Creation of Harleysville Life: The group founded Harleysville Life Insurance Company to offer life products to their P&C customers.
- 1956 – Name Change: The parent company adopted the name Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company.
- 1991 – IPO: Harleysville Group Inc. (the P&C arm) went public on NASDAQ, while the Mutual company retained majority ownership.
- 2000s – Regional Growth: Expanded its footprint across 32 states, becoming a prominent regional super-regional carrier.
- 2011 – Merger Announced: Harleysville Mutual and Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company announced a merger agreement.
- 2012 – Merger Completed: Nationwide completed the acquisition. Harleysville Mutual policyholders became members of Nationwide.
- 2012 – Delisting: Harleysville Group Inc. was delisted from NASDAQ as it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nationwide.
- 2013 – Consolidation: The Harleysville Life Insurance Company entity was eventually consolidated into Nationwide’s life operations.
- Present – Brand Status: The "Harleysville" brand was maintained for several years as a distinct channel for independent agents but has largely been absorbed into the Nationwide master brand.
