The Monumental Life Story: Where Did the Company Go?
Somewhere in a drawer, a safe, or a filing cabinet, a life insurance policy still carries a familiar name: Monumental Life. And when you try to look it up today, it can feel like the company vanished. But the story is simpler than it seems. Monumental Life didn’t “disappear” overnight—over time, it became part of the Transamerica family through a name change and later a merger. In the summer of 2014, the company behind Monumental Life updated its name. Starting July 31, 2014, Monumental Life Insurance Company changed its name to Premier Life Insurance Company. For policyholders, this was meant to be a “same-company, new-name” moment—your coverage didn’t suddenly reset just because the logo changed. The key takeaway: your policy’s terms and benefits continued.
A few years later, another corporate step happened behind the scenes. Effective October 1, 2020, Transamerica Premier Life merged into Transamerica Life Insurance Company. After that merger, Transamerica Life continued as the surviving company, and Transamerica Premier Life stopped existing as a separate company.
What matters most if you own a legacy policy: policies that were still in force were intended to be carried forward and handled by the surviving Transamerica life company.
